Firstly, just how does the Blueair 203 Air Purifier work?
Essentially, an air purifier is an electrical device which removes pollutants, such as pet dander, from the air in a room by drawing it in through a filter.
What separates the Blueair 203 from some other models on the market is that this one comes with a HEPA filter. The clue is in the name of course, but what does it actually mean?
Well, in order to be HEPA-certified, the filter must be able to capture no less than 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns in size. So microscopic pet dust and dander particles are easily dealt with.
In addition, and again in contrast to some other air purifiers out there, the Blueair 203 Slim HepaSilent uses a unique combination of electrostatic and mechanical filtration, with an encapsulated ion particle charging chamber which yields results superior to either mechanical or electrostatic filtration alone. This means it removes even more nasty chemicals and particles from the air leaving even fresher and healthier for you and your family.
We’re maybe getting a little too technical here! Let’s get back to a question which is for many people the number one most important thing…
How Noisy is the Blueair 203 Slim HepaSilent?
Another clue in the name perhaps?! Well, it certainly seems to be, judging by the many positive customer reviews on Amazon.com.
An extremely large percentage of customers who rated this product said that when operating the unit on the low or medium setting the sound was barely audible and of little or no disturbance.
The sound was reported to be a bit more noticeable when the purifier was operating on the high setting, likened by some to the sound generated by a central air system or a desktop computer fan.
On the other hand, some people even went so far as to say that they actually found this background noise soothing and conducive to helping them get off to sleep! This article on sleep backs up the link between background noise and better sleep.
There was one review which reported hearing a high-pitched whistle, but the general opinion was that this was likely down to some mechanical fault with that particular unit, such as a small gap in the seal.
A good tip seems to be to operate the unit on its high setting during the day when you’re maybe not at home, and then switch to the medium or low setting at night. But overall, excessive noise certainly doesn’t appear to be an issue.
Another really important factor to consider when making your choice is…
What Size of Room Can the Blueair 203 Be Used In?
The Blueair 203 works best in spaces up to 240 square feet. So an ideal choice for the average bedroom, study, living space etc.
Note: if you have a larger space that you want to purify the air in, this isn’t going to be the right model for you. I’d recommend this model for larger areas.
A great feature of this product is the fact that it’s fairly lightweight (25 lbs) and comes with a handle so is easily portable, despite not being fitted with castors.
So you can, say, have it on in your living room during the day or evening, and then carry it through to your bedroom when it’s time for lights out – no need necessarily to have to buy one for every room in your house!
Small Yet Mighty
As well as being lightweight, the Blueair 203 is also relatively compact, measuring in at 17 x 8 x 21 inches, so it won’t take up a huge amount of space in a room.
When positioning it always make sure to leave at least 4 inches behind any wall to allow for maximum airflow.
Power-wise, despite its small size it does a pretty impressive job of cleaning the air.
The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) tests the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of air purifiers and concluded that the Blueair 203 has the highest CADR available – 155 cubic feet per minute, with 5 air changes per hour.
The neutral Swedish design means it blends in nicely with most interior design schemes. Although practicality and efficiency are top of most peoples’ wish list when it comes to air purifiers, it’s a nice bonus nonetheless to have something that doesn’t make you wince every time you see it!
Does the Unit Also Get Rid of Pet Odors?
So, we know that this model can effectively deal with pet dander, but what about some of those less-than-fragrant smells that sometimes emanate from our little furry and feathered friends?!
Many customers have reported that they’ve noticed a decrease in musty odors since they started using the Blueair 203 with the regular HEPA filter.
Others have recommended upgrading the filter to Blueair’s SmokeStop carbon filter (which can be purchased separately) to get the maximum benefit when it comes to banishing bad smells.
A little bit more of an initial financial outlay then, but perhaps something to consider if you want to get rid of smells in addition to pet hair. And not just pet smells, but a variety of different odors such as those caused by cooking, smoking and mold.
On the subject of smells I should point out that a handful of users have mentioned detecting a slight smell when operating the Blueair 203 for the first time – similar to a ‘new car’ scent or a slight chemical smell. However, all reported that this smell disappeared, usually the same day but certainly within no more than a few weeks.
How Often Does The Filter Need Changed?
We’ve established that the filter is an integral part of an air purifier and so it needs to be maintained accordingly.
In fact, in order to protect the validity of your warranty you’re obliged to change the filters at the intervals specified in the user manual.
Most customers advised that they change their filters every 6 months, although some have said they’ve only done it once a year (a few after 2 years) without any problems.
And there has been much incredulity at just how dirty the filters have been when they’ve been removed – an insight into how much pollution there can be inside our homes, and testament to the efficiency of the Blueair 203 in drawing these contaminants out of the air.
Replacement filters are in the region of $50, so assuming a life span of 6 months that works out at roughly 27 cents per day to get cleaner, healthier air to breathe.
One neat feature of this particular model is that it comes with a magnetic timer which automatically alerts you when the filter needs changing – perfect for people like me who have a tendency to forget when these type of things need to be done!
And How Much Does It Cost To Run?
The 203 has a low energy consumption and is Energy Star rated.
Exact running costs will obviously depend on usage, but it’s estimated that it costs the same to clean the air in your home as it does to power a single light bulb.
I’m No Technical Whizz – Is This Air Purifier User-Friendly and Easy to Operate?
In a word – YES!
So, admittedly I’m not the world’s greatest when it comes to operating appliances that involve a degree of technology, and am constantly seeking out ones that can make life easier with minimum effort on my part!
The Blueair 203 definitely fits the bill on the user-friendly front.
It’s super-simple to operate with no complicated assembly required – just plug in and you’re good to go.
There are 3 manual settings – low, medium and high. There’s also a small blue LED light on the unit which stays on while the unit is in operation.
A few people reported that they found this light somewhat annoying when they were trying to get to sleep at night, but found that placing a piece of duct or coloured tape over it solved the problem. But it seems that Blueair have now addressed this themselves and have designed ‘NightCap Magnets’ to cover up the light at bedtime.
Even changing the filter is a piece of cake.
The rear door which houses the filter swings open, then simply pull the old filter out and slide the new one in.
What Kind of Warranty Does The Blueair 203 Air Purifier Come With?
A 1-year manufacturer’s warranty comes as standard, which covers defects in materials or workmanship, provided you’ve followed the instructions in the user manual (including changing the filter regularly, which we mentioned earlier).
It looks like you can upgrade this to 5 years for free by registering the unit with Blueair within 30 days of purchase.
If you decide to buy one it’s best to purchase from an authorised Blueair dealer such as Amazon.com or one of it’s resellers. If you ever need to verify your unit’s authenticity look for a bar code on it which lists a unique serial number.
So – Is This The Best Air Purifier for Pet Hair? Our Verdict…
I’m going to go all out here and say you’d be hard-pressed to find a better air purifier for pet dander, hair and feather dust from dogs, cats and birds.
With plenty of 4 and 5 stars ratings among customers on Amazon.com and consistently glowing reviews it’s a great value-for-money option that’s not too noisy, won’t take up a lot of space, is easy to operate and maintain, and – most crucially of all – is highly effective in collecting those microscopic particles of pesky pet dander.
